Western Wayne High School -- South Canaan, Pennsylvania
About Western Wayne High School
Western Wayne High School is located in Wayne County in the north east corner of Pennsylvania.  The Western Wayne School District comprises the western half of Wayne County extending north from Sterling to Aldenville and covers 192 square miles.  At that size, there are about 4 high school students per square mile.  We haven't been able to determine when the Western Wayne School District was formed, but the Waymart High School - Class of 1965 Yearbook lists "Mr. Edgar F. Jenkins" as "Supervising Principal of Western Wayne Joint Schools".  You may remember having an assembly in 7th or 8th grade to vote on the school song and the style of the Class Ring for the new Western Wayne High School.

Western Wayne High School was formed combining the students from Waymart High School and Lake Ariel High School.  The Class of 1973 was the first to graduate from the new school.  The old Lake Ariel High School served as an elementary school until it was torn down at the end of  2015. Waymart High School has since been torn down and a small community park stands in it's place.  The old first grade building has also been torn down.  Some of the Waymart students may remember going to second grade in the basement of the Presbyterian Church which is still across the street from the former high school. The children of Waymart attend the R. D. Wilson Elementary School that was built adjacent to the athletic fields where Waymart High School used to play it's home baseball and soccer games.

About The Class of 1976
The students from "Class of 1976" started their elementary education at the Lake Ariel, Waymart, Hamlin, South Canaan or Aldenville schools.  In 1969 and 1970 the students from Lake Ariel & Waymart were temporarily joined together at the elementary school in South Canaan for 5th and 6th grade.  After South Canaan, we returned to Lake Ariel & Waymart schools until half way through 9th grade.

The New Western Wayne High School was supposed to be ready for us to start 9th grade on September 1, 1972, but due to a rainy summer & fall and a workers strike, it was delayed.  Here is a news article from November 13th 1971 that provides some details.  The Class of 1976 merged under one roof at the new high school, after a long Christmas break in January of 1973. We graduated on June 1st, 1976.
